After realizing how likely webrings and the sites on them are to go offline, I realize there is somewhat a meritted reason people stopped using them. My favorite "rings" these days dispose of the ring idea entirely and it's just a static page with a bunch of links on it. The member pages just link back to the ring page. It's simple, relies less on users to keep the ring, more useful to someone in the future.
Websites are abandoned because People might move to other websites or people that were teens grew up and went to college.
