Heard from friends that big YouTubers are now starting to learn how to use Neocities, this place might about to grow real fast. MAN it had to be the one month where I'm in the middle of moving... --------------------- UPDATE: This is kind of a scary prospect actually
i predict an uptick in people using pre-made layouts with almost no changes other than color. maybe they'll leave after they discover websites aren't inconvenient, but we might, for a short time, be overwhelmed with people expecting convenience. i shudder at the thought
i also feel like this is bad for a reason that is harder to articulate and maybe makes me sound like a pretentious dick....Neocities and other site hosts are already really easy to find, actually, if you know what you're looking for. people who wanted to find it, would. now, though, it's more visible people who didn't know or care what they were missing, it's like giving Myspace to someone used to Tiktok or Instagram
I think I have some faith in people. Tbf I almost did the whole template route and almost gave up on coding a few times. The only reason I kept going is because I was procrastinating from doing my illustration stuff…
i mean no matter how or why people arrive here, more people choosing the indie web instead of the big social medias is a good thing. but i dont know if neocities growing bigger is a good thing in itself? i think we're gonna need to remind ourselves to not focus too much on numbers or followers and remember why we started our sites in the 1st place before we end up w the same behavior we're trying to escape from here
shift in the zeitgeist. its gonna be a shock at first. a good thing for the zeitgeist overall. anything away from hyper consumption can only be good. but not really good for the niche. gym in January. not an issue for me i find sites from of sites i already like.
you guys are right. no matter where people are coming from, if they make something good, that's what matters. i just don't have faith in people, not even myself. those kinds of numbers can be addicting
I mean, from what I know, Onio (onio.club) did make a youtube video about the indie web but they've been on here for 3 years now. I definitely got an uptick on my stats + guestbook from his video but people have been really nice! TBH I don't think people will learn how to code en masse from this
I think it could be a good thing, but at the same time I'm afraid of the number of empty sites we'll get from ppl who will only join to follow their favorite creators, which is not the end of the world by itself but oof x__X
Yeah on second thought it's dawning on me how much of an impact this might make, good or bad. God I hope it's just a boom-and-bust and then everything stays the same
I need to finish my songs NOW! and, for these news and y'alls predictions, I'm now scared and happy, I still want this to be small but a little big, I don't want any negative stuff 🥹
not for nothin the 1gb limit on free accounts (of which i use under 1% pfff [not counting the mp3s/mp4s i host off filegarden]) - as for it all i'll just neutrally observe over time really
it'll peak hard then plateau after a while ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i agree with brach, hoping moreso the existing infrastructure can handle any peak in traffic then changes in site culture and so on. this isnt really a "social media" like most others are and that can be initally offputting to many. still, it's worth downloading your sites/mounting them on a drive as a backup just in case
@brachy @underwhite i wing it in the site editor (i actually use Nekoweb) for that fresh, improvised, desperate vibe, but then once i'm proud of the changes i've made, i'll save a copy to my drive. save your important shit, please, if you haven't already
Way I see it, it's the same as anything that gets really popular. It's a big craze, everyone wants in. After a while, most will give up. This is not strange. There will be a few that remain, whose interests are truly peaked. Those are the ones that become the next generation. Its the same with art, music, anything really. There's that one in a hundred, always been like that.
In this case, SrPelo! Wow https://bsky.app/profile/srpelo.bsky.social/post/3mfdl2p5tl22y
am i the only one who doesn't think is good, per se?
Someone hold my hand I’m nervous
i predict most will not stay

good is subjective. i guess i just mean that i want things to come from the heart
and i'm scared of people

also quick reminder temmie is on neocities already so this place gonna GROW I'm scared
It is good, I think. There would be more beautiful websites, but i totally agree with pocketdollhouse :)
Good for the internet. Not necessarily good for the culture of Neocities.
hope the infrastructure will be able to handle this
"Can I Finish My Site Rewrite Before Neocities' Population Implodes And Kills The Servers?"
