is it a problem for anyone that i don't have navigation buttons or a home page button on every page? when i browse, i usually use safari's forward and back buttons or swipe on my track pad, but i realize other people might navigate differently.

It's kind of a chain effect. Someone followed you and commented that they like your site, which then shows up for everyone who follows that person. They go, "well I match with this person's taste, let me check it out." Then they like it and the cycle continues. This happens when what you're doing kicks ass, which it does.
