Yay DDR! I've been wanting to get a dance pad but also I can't STAND the foam ones because I like the more tactile experience of a hard pad while simultaneously not wanting to spend that much money on one.

@diremptiness i totally get that!! i tried the hard pad for the first time and its like a completely different experience lol. i personally find both of them fun but oh man i WISH it was easier/cheaper to get a hard pad... i'm even considering making my own as a summer vacation project haha

fantastic write-up! i am definitely guilty of building my site in private before making an account on here. it should be more encouraged on here to start with something ugly and focus on substance rather than aesthetics. the beauty of Neocities is that everyone's entire site can be enjoyed again and again instead of just their "latest updates" disappearing into the void. the coolest sites on here are the oldest ones

that have a rich history of people living their whole lives in them

i wish for every single new person on this platform to see this blog entry. this is such a "back in my day" thing to say but when i first joined 4 years ago it wasnt as bad as it is now. I honestly think it started becoming more about visuals at around the time i joined.

sometimes i see such visually stunning sites and feel bad about myself for not learning more css, js, using a static site generator, and all that other shit that makes a website look good on the outside. this blog reminded me that thats not what im here for!! i dont even like coding fr i just like talking about stuff!!

i think as much as we all come to the indie web with intentions to break free from the perfectionism and social practices of mainstream social media (and just modern internet culture), it still seeps back into how we end up using the indie web (call it conditioning)

as someone who just started 2 months ago, it's really refreshing to see the truth that I don't have to be perfect! I started coding in the neocities editor because... i didn't know how to code outside '-'. But in many ways, I'm glad I did, because that kind of gives a sort of life to my website I guess haha

very well said! I also get bummed seeing an interesting looking site but...there's nothing else to really look in or enjoy! I think I spend most of my time on peoples pages reading their blogs, their media recommendations, or look at their art (if they're artists) It feels like I'm peeking into someone else's world & mind. It's nice & makes this place feel a whole lot more like a community rather than another-

love this write up... i think with any creative/artistic hobby there's always a desire for perfection or to make something "good enough" or "worth while", but especially with webdev ive seen that way less often! i think its very a very freeing creative outlet to just get thoughts/ideas out of your system without worrying about it too much. that's how i feel at least, i hope other people feel similarly :')

ty everyone for reading :D glad you guys feel the same way! i totally agree w you @isntreal i've only been around for two years but i also think that it wasn't this bad before :P it feels like more and more people are showing up who like the concept of having a cool website but dont have anything to say... which is okay ig i just dont really get the point of joining the indie web if thats the case

100% everything you've said here. to assume people are doing things for aesthetics rather than substance is really not the right way to see things, since personal taste indeed looks different for everyone. but i admit that the amount of nostalgia-focused websites that all seem to follow the same format is a little bit concerning. there definitely has been an air of people wanting to prove themselves -

in a way that defiles their actual voice. i think it's right to say that we're conditioned by the current state of the internet though. "just something that exists for the sake of catching your eye for a few seconds and moving on" is a great way to put it. it feels like there's a subconscious automatic response to dismiss things that aren't ''aesthetic'' so presentation has to carry things, not the content itself :(

ty for reading @doorintosummer!! i personally do think some people do things for aesthetics LOL. and honestly that could be cool if it came from a place of admiration and/or it was the purpose of the site itself (i've seen sites that specify which designers they take inspiration from and such and i respect that sorta work) but it doesnt really feel that way with most sites -

a lot of them seem to try to tick the same 3 nostalgia y2k boxes and call it a day and thats just exactly the sort of thing that at least *i* wanted to escape from when i started my website.. i just think we have enough stuff that exists just for the sake of looking cool anywhere else on the web. its awesome that this place allows nerdy and "ugly" things to shine and i hope it stays that way
