I like your corn idea. in 2025 one of my goals was to read and learn more about ingredients generally to get a better grasp on the history and making of foods I eat. it's been more than just a history of food - history of people, communication, and the world. very cool stuff.
I'm wondering if all the "2025 is the year of..." instances were more of a journalistic verbal tic than anybody making a statement about 2025. I'm pretty sure that if something happened or appeared 2-3 times, in 2025, suddenly 2025 was the year of that thing. Cliches like that tend to spread like wildfire through magazines and blogs, and AI can't be helping.
@emilynhoward I agree, and I’d add that it’s also media outlets out to make a buck on affiliate sales by making things appear trendier than they are. GQ called out striped towels in May, never to be spoken of again. The towel they suggested is $89. I think some other items on the list might have more to them, though. For example, anime movies ARE growing in popularity.
The only items I noticed that resurfaced throughout the year, though, were AI and crypto. There were so many articles about them that I stopped adding most entries. They’re so buzzy I’m sure 2026 and beyond will also be the year of them.
Oh my god! that is my sister and my favourite Christmas short as well! Good memories!

I love the idea of the year of corn. It has uses even as it’s growing in gardens. They make good stalks for vines!
seasons greetings and that is my favorite cartoon for this time of year too
The US is a country of corn and I am so excited for your self appointed year of corn. Everything is corn. You'll see.
