Spiritual successor to Napster basically. Adware/Spyware free and pretty much has a userbase with any song you can think of, no matter how obscure.
Cost I imagine. I used them pretty much from 2000 to 2007, and the 720x480 dimensions were sufficient. But then you needed a player and such, so exporting them to a DVD was just easier as that tech was taking off. Plus DVD+/-R's got down to $1 or less. Tapes in general were just on their way out. I skipped the HDV versions completely and stuck with the SD miniDV format until the DSLR revolution gave us better HD.
