As we say in Asia, marriage isn't between individuals. You marry the entire family.

Curious how despite the both of us being Slavic (although from very distantly related groups), in Russia a "traditional" 21st century wedding is mostly all about the bride: the guests, the decor, the theme, everything is decided by her with some tips from the family. The thing that happened on your sister's friend's wedding would weird out both the "traditional" and the "progressive" alike here.

it made me think about one of my cousins who had one of these pompous "traditional" weddings back in the late 00s and it was all about her husband's family and friends. they both married in a registrar and in a church which was really stupid as 10 years later they separated because he was fucking horrible towards her

catholic marriage is a hell, as getting a divorce, well getting it anulled is tedious process to go through. i have someone going through it and it's a nightmare, even after having strong evidence in canonical court and being separated for years already

@22yk01 so true, i have no idea how people manage to do a 180 that fast, and i cant help but wonder if theyre happy or just doing it because "it's the natural thing to do at my age" etc

@murid yea true, but you know registrars office marriage are not at all uncommon here despite the country being catholic, yet it feels like younger gens are starting to fall into the tradcath blackhole because of our general rise of ultra nationalism etc. i feel like it all kind of stems from that. my friend told me there were some literal sieg hiel tier moments at that other wedding i mentioned. forgot to say that

@saint-images you know i thought that's how it was here as well, but i guess i was wrong lmao. often the groom will be too shy to go against his families wishes so they end up dominating. and its always the more conservative side that wins funnily enough

It's common to priests call a bride a broodmare in your country? LOL wth, I didn't went to many weddings in my life but I know that this is offensive (at least in my country).

It totally depends on the priest and what they decide to say, but this one said something along the lines of "now that you joined in this union you must fulfill your wifely duties and make children and guard the home" etc. it sounds more uh.. raw in my language haha

When I was getting married in the registrar's office the lady marrying us read an extremely nice text that was completely based on equality, partnership and mutual respect - I honestly thought that church weddings werent much different.

Oh and one last thing, young couples have to attend "sex education" church classes before getting married on which they just throw church propaganda at you lmao. It's really demeaning

!! Reading things like this, I am glad that I am an assertive woman and my husband respects and loves me for it. My mother in law tried to take control of our very non-traditional wedding and I told her to back off, if she wanted to have another wedding, she could get re-married herself. She made some rude comment to my husband (her son, who she disrespects all the time) about us eventually getting divorced...

Either way, things are still tense between my MIL and I to this day since I have no respect for her, but guess what? My husband and I have been happily married for 9 years now! AND I got the wedding I wanted lol
