In complete agreement. It does seem as well like there is a competitive and or signaling aspect to aesthetics these days. The desire to signal to others that you have an elite type of taste on Letterboxd for example. I believe this is also related to the rise of at-home critics of art in general, it seems the conversations and non-actions around art have become more important than simply listening, seeing or enjoying

@literaturegirl you know I like my fair share of Ted-and-Lewisposting. @koilwood yeah, I forgot to mention it but this ties in with what you said: the reason these behaviours are so detestable is because they stem from a lack of authenticity. There's no genuine experience being had if you treat media like a database animal (in the case of aesthetuc surrogates) or like class signaling mechanism (as you described).

On the point of signalling, I have seen it taken to such an extreme that folks are paying people to mark, annotate, wear down choice books for them. So that they appear well read without ever having done any reading at all. Beyond maybe a ChatGPT summery or the like.
