Japanese paronomasia dates back to the middle Heian era, when courtiers amused themselves and each other mostly with homophonic conceits. Excepting sylleptic varieties, Japanese have since the Meiji era specialized in all varieties of dajare at least as exhaustively as the English and Maya. Dajare are ubiquitous in owarai and marketing.
