does anyone know if there's a way to post a status update (like this) without actually going onto neocities? the CLI doesn't have an option for it

There's nothing in the API documentation about text posts. It's all file operations and header level site info. Neocities is open source, though, so you could get someone else to add it.

I did look at the code as well, and there don't seem to be any secrets. The only undocumented function I could find was for renaming an existing file.
