Yeah there's lot's of alternative mobile OSes, another that has great support is Postmarket OS.

Cheers, i've got an old Xiaomi Redmi 2 it'll work on, it's got cyanogen mod on it. obviously the phone's ancient now by modern standards, but it might be worth a go to test it out, then maybe buy a newer compatible phone, but I tend to mainly use a PC - i've never really been a smartphone person!
