Feels like a particularly dark time for the state of the free/open/anonymous internet. The global push for real life IDs to access websites is quite alarming
The guise of doing so in order to "protect the kids" is the same rhetoric they've used since 1996 when they were pushing the Communications Decency Act. Back then, even the big mainstream sites rallied against it in protest, but now they work in tandem with the governments to oppress us
This is about creating the framework for them to find and punish individual users for wrong think. Be it thru the government itself or their coercion of essential "free market" services that are deeply intertwined with the state.
Its global-ish, the UK is just the first to act, but the US, EU and AUS have all announced very similar policies. This comes right at the same time the American credit card duopoly decides they can restrict what games are sold. There's a thread on Xitter regarding GOSRN which is apparently a global initative. They'll come for VPNs next.
wtf that sounds horrible i aint doing that... ofc theyre saying its to "protect the kids" no you just want to manipulate society.... hahah very funny jokes...
i am preparing to disconnect from the internet entirely. i have a foolish hope that maybe personal websites will be the last effected so at least we can have this. but im not sure.

part of the problem is that you can't even avoid it by setting up an indipendant site. because they can just regulate on that too
It's terrifying and I hate it.
"global push" isn't this just a UK thing? besides, you can easily avoid all this ID nonsence with VPN.
i feel like it's not really a problem FOR NOW, but it is pretty scary to think about what else goverment might push. maybe it is just a beginning.
