You know, I've seen similar behavior from a mourning dove once over a period of several days. My thoughts were pretty much the same as yours, maybe it was sick. I spread birdseed for it, and several days later it took off. It's plumage looked healthy--not molting. I'm just as curious as you about its tame behavior. It was very clearly a wild animal, but it was quite comfortable being within a couple of feet of me.
