Coordinates help us to locate things in space. The "X-axis" is the numberline that moves left-and-right. The "Y-axis" is the numberline that moves up-and-down. The zero where they cross is called the "origin" because that is where we always start from.

If we are given two numbers (an "ordered pair"), then the first number tells us where to go along the x-axis starting from the origin, and the second number tells us where to go along the Y-axis after that. So, for example, if we were given the ordered pair (3,2) this would mean: Start at 0. Move to the right 3. Then, finally, move up 2. The two numbers are always in that order, X then Y.
