I hear you Chip. I am in a similar situation with the people who I know in real life, but it is not so much slurs and more so manipulation. One is set to clear my wallet by the new year from a stupid bet/dare, despite owing me money. Things will be better soon, I can almost guarantee it.
I only have a couple of friends that I see once in awhile. I have been a loner for a very long time, although I try to be friendly towards everyone. People aren't anything to be afraid of, but one needs to enforce boundaries sometimes. This might include leaving relationships filled with manipulative behavior. Friends support one another's healthy interests; they don't undermine them.
