I really agree with your latest diary entry. I've enjoyed and participated in the y2k-revivalism, but it unfortunately looks like people are content with displaying all the superficial signs/symbols/aesthetics with none of the attitude that made it substantive and subversive in the first place.

i'm tired of it too! though zoomies now try to meme "real y2k" which is still far away from what people wore back then, it's just 90s minimalism with zoomer spin. i'm just so tired of it at this point. it can be fun to use design cues but their larp feels so fake

i mean i love these women who wear like exclusively 40s vintage and it's tied to their lifestyle and it feels more sincere? they do it for themselves, when most of zoomers do it for clout and move onto new thing when time comes.

great entry! you're right, maybe it hits different because it's the era we grew up in, but the current interest in y2k feels so insincere and like you said, performative. reminds me of the old 360 kid meme, "the great thing about the 360 isn't beating the games, it's showing everyone online that i did"

I saw on a sewing subreddit post where a girl made a "y2k" shorts out of her pants, herself. But her shorts were high waisted jeans with cutout pockets and a lightblue denim (which don't look nothing like the y2k shorts people wore back them lol).

I get your rant about "idealized y2k nostalgia". I feel the same way, because when I was a kid/tween/teen everyone dressed so fucking ugly and I hated LOL the adults would wore stupid clothing (my mom had an ugly high heeled clog that looked like it was fake wood) and all teens would wear awful outfits with obligatory black eyeliner (me included LOL).

Might be reading a bit much from that video. People see cool things, and want to emulate them, the finer points are (seen as) unimportant/irrelevant because time does move on after all, and superficial things are the easiest to reproduce. Context can't be brought back.

In fact everything I mentioned here I've encountered already on everskies, however those kids never went as viral. You hit the nail on the head in your second sentence though, that's pretty much all this is imo!

HONESTLY Seinfeld is a very understandable addiction to have!! It's nice to have a break where you can do nothing, but I totally get the feeling that can arise if you're not getting dressed up frequently... hope you feel better about that soon!! ; __ ;♡♡
