Ah, I see. Yes, it's a TLD, but it's not custom. They released a whole bunch of new ones a number of years ago for more variety. They're generally not prohibitively expensive.

@stupied the SLD would be the main part preceding the TLD. TLD may not be the correct term, but neither is SLD. I am talking about the few letters after the dot.

I don't think there is a way around it, there's an option that users can set that automatically forwards their profile to their website and in that case I don't think you can follow them :(
