What, if anything, are your Neocities "views" based on? It feels like an arbitrary number, it doesn't at all match up with the counter placed on the homepage.

i'm very curious if hotlinked images count as a "view" because there's no way i have 175k visitors to my site. it's gotta be from hotlinked art i've posted elsewhere getting loaded on someone's browser and counting as a view.

Definitely web crawlers are a part of it, but I didn't even consider hotlinked things potentially counting toward views - it would explain some of these crazy high numbers.

Need to edit page to add a NSFW warning to my Pillowfort link, sorry if I accidentally blasted anyone's eyeballs with NSFW art. PF bills itself as having strong NSFW controls (you can 100% switch off all adult content with a setting, it is set to this by default) but I just learned that this only applies to people with accounts. If you look at a PF page without being logged in/without an account, you see EVERYTHING.

I would prefer it if you could only see 18+ stuff if you are logged in and have enabled the setting so that it's opt-in. But I understand why they didn't design it that way even if I don't like it.

Medium-active. Twitter's acquisition by Musk saw a bunch of people flood back to the site + new sign-ups, and they got something like 170% funding last month which is more than I've ever seen. But it's still small and slow-moving, it's no Tumblr.

I batted for DeviantART for so many years but it's impossible to do anymore. The whole site's an AI art cesspit and the fact that they introduced their own generator (a SD fork trained on DA images, I think) feels like admitting this is the new direction they want the site to go.

I'm not actually opposed to AI art, the part that bothers me is that on DeviantART, AI-generated artwork and handdrawn artwork aren't distinguished from one another, they show up alongside each other. On Pixiv, AI art is considered a different category and if you don't want to see it you can turn it off.

Your art's really nice, especially that style you used for the pagedolls throughout your about section, I'm not sure what it reminds me of... It's kinda pop-anime that you might've seen in old jp magazines in the late 90's early 00's? Very cool.

A little surprised about the spate of unfollows in the wake of me posting essentially "terminally online drama disconnected from reality does not interest me", but if it's important to people I'll reiterate it here. I want to preface this saying I think people engaging in fandom and enjoying creative endeavors should be able to do whatever pleases them, but I personally deeply, profoundly loathe "humanizations" of non-human characters.

I hate this compulsion people seem to have of "humanizing" everything. I know it's not that deep, but... why can't characters that aren't humans just be allowed to stay that way, to keep the essential traits that make them, them? What's so appealing about stripping back everything that makes them different to just make them another old human? Is that the only way you can be interested in them and their stories?

Plus as soon as you turn like... a dragon, orc, alien, skeleton etc into a human, you can't avoid giving them a race and saddling them with all the baggage and assumptions that come with that.

so many good points here! i personally enjoy exploring "what if" scenarios and taking the challenge of trying to translate a character from one form to another, but i don't disagree with you. it can seem like people do this because they didn't take the OG design seriously enough, and have to turn it into a more "relatable" form to fully appreciate the character. sometimes it verges on the assumption that non-human ch

i mean, people do this with human characters too. imagining them as animals. i hate to be that guy but most artists that even bother imagining what their favorite character would look like in another universe probably does so because they think its hot 😭
