I once read an art book that pointed out something similar: "The marks themselves are abstract and take their form and meaning only in relation to each other." How one thing only makes sense in reference to other things is almost a metaphor for life.
There is indeed great artistry in deciding both what to add and what to take away from a photo or drawing, much like how music is composed of both sound and silence. I suppose the same could also be said of life; we create different situations and experiences through the behavior, thoughts, and feelings that we choose to entertain.
