over years of progressing with myartgallery and neomanager as a whole, i came to a conclusion that i really dislike how it is right now. i will be rewriting its functinoality from scratch, hopefully packed into a much more lightweight package, and then we will see about the promised localhost control app. right now it's too heavy, insecure and unmodifiable to be actually distributed around...

(MyAG is still supported and if anyone encounters bugs, they can report - however, i think i only saw like, 4 people use it at all, ever. I can see it has to be made simpler.)

more like the core architecture is too clunky and cumbersome, so the code that can be reused isn't, and a lot of redundant functions are made. i know how to fix that, but it means a soft reset for the whole thing

yes! i was stoked to find your site as well. the panel you are referring to just had english words cast phonetically in cyrillic as an aesthetic choice lol, but it would be better to use actual russian so i will almost definitely take you up on that offer at some point

Added an anti-ai MOTD right below the intro para. It stays until Kyle speaks up in any capacity. We didn't hear shit since this thing went down, which is suspicious to say the least. I need a guarantee he's not scraping my website for another slop machine. Sign and share the fucking petition. Let's get it to over 100 and then start tagging neocities and Kyle himself in places you can tag at.

I see some places started copying their site to nekoweb. While i understand the urge to do that (and copped my username already, too), i think it's important to keep fighting for this place until the end. I also genuinely think Kyle is an intelligent person and is nearly not as dense as Cool Tech CEOs, and may even listen.

While I understand the frustrations with AI, wouldn't a coding assistant be a good thing for newcomers? People who want to escape the corporate web for more privacy-respecting, liberating alternatives, but don't have the technical knowledge to code from scratch? AI helping folks create a space of their own that's not-for-profit could help bring in a larger demographic.

This "coding assistant" has multiple factors to consider when it comes to it's use. There is the environmental impact, and the quality of the code produced, and the fact that the neocities userbase is one that cherishes the old web.

I think that a website builder tool would be really useful. That's something I feel like we could all get behind and doesn't need to integrate AI. Ever used Piczo back in the day? If Kyle wants to expand on ease-of-use web building here, a good free drag-and-drop web builder would be incredible for newcomers who don't know much about coding. :)

that's def the thing about AI tho-- all these other methods, some of them were used for years or decades, all exist and are time-tested and well documented. but someone keeps selling tech CEOs a bill of goods on AI even though it's patently broken in so many places you'd have to be crazy to use it at all.

like, obvs the tech sector doesnt give a shit about the environment (hence strip-mining to make microchips) but you seriously have to spend almost 2ce as much time fixing AI mistakes as you would have just writing code from scratch. it's absolutely the dumbest thing to hit tech since 2010.

It's not a foolproof anti-scraping solution, but we can use robots.txt (and/or meta name=robots tags) to tell the major cloud LLMs to stay off our sites: https://coryd.dev/posts/2024/go-ahead-and-block-ai-web-crawlers/

sure, robots.txt is a must, but it doesn't mean a lot. neocities hosts our sites, the data is already there, they don't need to webscrape in order to train. I want a warranty from Kyle that we're not used as training data.

regarding the AI thing gremlin and i have been talking about: it doesn't sound like the Penelope AI is anything more than an analytical engine; sort of an "autocorrect for your code" type of thing. The problem is that KD hasnt said which API Penelope is based on, so there could easily be a corporate datascraper on the other side of it.

I don't know if it is a scraper involved. However the facts of the matter are that Kyle tried at least twice to add "coding assistants" to neocities despite understanding that AI/ML A: Contributes significantly to climate change and B: The neocities crowd is against this kind of stuff, we came here to avoid some the issues that plauge the modern web

So for the sake of being fair, Kyle acted pretty shady and could have potentially thought about scraping the data or selling it to AI companies to use BUT so far there is no proof of that so thats not what I am saying.

What there is proof of is coding assistants being added to the neocities text editor! These got added under the guise that they help and assist new webdevs HOWEVER the code produced by "coding assistants" is notorious for presenting code that is way more trouble then it's worth. What this will realistically result in is more lower quality web pages that don't function or require more time to fix then code that you-

my brain has been occupied by the idea of building a functioning computer out of 74 series logic, no CPU or whatever involved - just for funsies. Which is definitely possible and much easier than a lot of other asinine computer ideas. But even considering that, is it really worth my time?...

Yeah, i know how to make registers and ALU and the control unit etc out of basic logic chips. I can make them. I can make my own assembly language that translates into machine code for that exact abomination. That would be fun! And i know how to do it in good detail! But. WHY exactly would i do it except for to maniacally laugh when it finally works

Not sure why the screenshotter no longer posts my screenshots... maybe it gave up seeing the same shit over and over? Anyways, there's now a tutorial on menu buttons with color-shifting backgrounds, since i saw like five sites use static images for those; so i decided to show the lighter and more flexible way of CSS.

reworded the click-to-load thing for the track of the day because apparently loading the bandcamp iframe *does* put three? four? cookies to your browser. They're all either session or less then day-long storage, so the embed stays, it's not asinine. Just something to be addressed.

... i made a greasemonkey script that generates a js array of all the embed iframe text for every track on a given bandcamp page. Why? To make this cool 'daily elysian tunes pick' thing, of course! Based entirely on your set date and five hardcoded prime numbers. Alas, an iframe is an iframe.. so it only loads if you willingly activate it :D
