yeah i know cinni.net keeps hosting death threats about me after calling her out for having a CP link on her guestbook and deleted days after she got her clicks or something. i fully understand this person's mindset. they keep escalating in violence and gives them permission. i've been watching like everyone else does were not stupid and i'm not stressed

how do you guys view separating art from the artist? I need some opinions here, do you think its fine to view the art if it does not financially contribute toward the problematic person itself?

i dont think you can separate art and artist, cause the artist made the art & the existence of the art is the sole reason there is an “artist”. when both are so intimately linked ripping one away seems absurd to me. But one can obvsly enjoy the art, while disliking+criticising the artist (& often you can even use the art to criticise the artist), so as long as you dont ignore the artist imo it’s most often fine

In the actual contemporary era, some arts are just threw in the web and world and sometimes you can not even know the original artist of something you see (per exemple , a meme ; or street arts) ; I believe the accumulation of productions and datas are also contributing to the lost of some tracking of originals that can make you not retrieve the artist, and in consequence, make the link with their production.

But in the beginning, an artist produce an artwork which is longing in their core so it is obviously linked. Also the financial support mentioned is an interesting parameter to add in account ; I think you can appreciate someone point of view but not agree with the full personality of someone

be warned VERY HOT TAKE i think the whole argument is silly, critical thinking is required when consuming art. Even if you are contributing to the artist financially, you're financially supporting much more wicked things any time you buy a bottle of water, eat a banana, ride a blue bird brand city bus, buy soap from unilever, etc etc etc... kanye west or azalea banks are not keeping slaves or lobbying the government.

I think it's possible to enjoy art without supporting the artist depending on what is actually being depicted or what they did. If it's just a cute television series about two kids playing in a sand castle and the creator is a crazed bigot who hates minorities, then you can probably cut off the series from the creator considering how little the ties are

However, I do think there is a fine line that can be crossed as this hypothetical show can directly allude to the creator's risqué beliefs. Somebody could sing about killing random people they see on the street and then it turns out that they did exactly what they sung about, rendering it essentially unlistenable in public locations

really interesting responses here. i think they’re both inextricably linked, but at the same time people are not static nor is the relationship the artist and the audience has with the art. people change all the time for all sorts of reasons, sometimes not at all. imo you can enjoy something problematic and recognize it has value without endorsing the actions of the person behind it

its been easier for me to accept this perspective the more I’ve separated my judgment of people from their actions with time, I think people can do horrible things and still be talented and provide value to the world worthy of appreciation in other ways

maybe thats cognitive dissonance on my part because a lot of the most valuable art in my life has come from not so great (or at the least very weird fringe) people. you see a lot of depth of experience and empathy that’s otherwise hard to find in mainstream culture that makes art inherently interesting to me
