I'm sorry for your loss. I know you said you did not know her well, but death, especially at that age, has a way of messing with us and making us think more about what we want out of life, who to spend it with, how we wish to be remembered. I wish you well on the dating front!

thank you -- even though i didn't know her personally, in a way, i felt like i did. we were both active on the forum and read/replied to each others posts often. i'm sad it won't happen ever again. and you're right, it has me reflecting.

ooo, i have not seen that UCC blended coffee before... i have a sangaria can that sounds similar to the one you described, amusingly the brand name is "Quality Coffee", the kind of name that would be guaranteed cheap junk if it was an american product

Seems to be separate from their main "Quality Coffee" series, and I never saw it in Japan. According to this page it has a coconut sub-flavour, which I definitely never noticed.

Hard to tell based on my destroyed post-COVID tastebuds, but I think the UCC Blend is quite a bit better than the Sangaria. Although I can't ignore the possibility that the can's colour/design is playing a major role in this judgment.

Also I'd like to take this opportunity to admit that it took me about four months of living in Japan before I realized that カフェオレ meant "Café au lait" and not the phrase I kept saying in my head: "Café, olé!"

You could use JS to implement a switch on the page and store it locally for the user, then they can decide which they use.

non-js alternative is the css @media (prefers-color-scheme: light) {} which checks the user's system setting

Thanks so much! Once I get this zine finished (and that depends on when this covid gets finished...) I plan on putting it up. I'm also interested in starting a physical collection of other people's zines for trade as well.

love this! I was going to comment something similiar — part of my attraction to the slow web is that I don't have to focus on what would get maximum views if I don't want to. Good writing should always keep audience and context top-of-mind, but at the heart of great writing is authentic self-expression. That's the sort of stuff that sticks with people, as opposed to something they "like", scroll past and forget.
