Any time I see a review for a game on a computer I haven't used myself, I always end up wanting that computer a lot more (vintage computers are my favourite retro gaming platforms), and you absolutely did that for me with the Archimedes with the Lander/Zarch reviews. V2000 also sounds delightfully playful with its mechanics and I'm interested in checking it out down the line!

Also, you reminded me of shareware game Rats! in the 1990s which had an even more extreme female orgasm sound effect, which my parents were not amused by. What is it with these old devs?

@p7uen I've actually seen Rats! before myself, and yeah, the sound effect there REALLY goes overboard even compared to Crystal Quest and Apeiron. Something I've noticed when looking into classic Mac games is just how developers could get away with whatever they wanted in self-published shareware.

(addendum: I say it's "something I've noticed" as if I only found out recently, but in actuality I've known it for the past 23 years due to a time when I accidentally stumbled upon Barney Blaster as a kid and got horrified by the cute purple dinosaur being gorily torn to shreds on the title screen)

We just got over 100k views, thank you so much! Even if that's small compared to heavy hitting Youtube channels and the like, I'm honestly so happy I can share my nerdy passions with this many people. I'm thinking I might like to do some other pages along this line for non-game related aspects of retro Macs. E.g. maybe a page discussing the differences between all the different versions of Mac OS from System 1 to OS 9.2.2, or the different processors Apple has used in Macs over the year (Motorola, PowerPC, Intel, Apple Silicon)

It's my 29th birthday! While I fight off the usual existential crisis of growing older, I'll again thank everyone who has followed over the last couple of years I've been working on this website for. In addition, relevant to the website, for my birthday I'm getting a G4 Mac Mini! It's three times as powerful as my current G4 Cube, so this will allow for reviews of more recent and more graphically demanding Mac games.

There's a bunch of weird and interesting early Mac OS X games that I've been interested in covering but didn't have the specs for until now. Did you know for instance that the first Unity game ever made was a Mac exclusive? More weird vintage Mac trivia inbound when I start reviews up again.

And with that, I'm now going on hiatus. Had some bad writers block with this review in spite of having a great time with the game. I'm also tired, so apologies if I left in a bunch of errors I didn't notice. Will likely return to review more Mac games in a month or two, once my mental health hopefully settles down and once the next batch of Mac games I ordered online arrive in the mail. I saw this on the global feed and even though I've never heard of Unreal before, this was such an interesting read! I'm not experienced with this whole genre of gaming, but I thought that your writing style made it seem really familiar! Unreal looks like such a cool game!

I've played 100+ hrs of UT99 online but I don't think I've ever touched the campaign mode of it or the previous version so this was my first experience with it. Good review and has convinced me to start a playthrough!

Further update: I'm planning for two more Mac reviews before taking a hiatus for a bit, both of which are games I've already beaten and gotten screenshots of, so just a matter of writing the reviews and editing the html. I think I need to get out of work mode for a bit and just play some games solely for fun as opposed to fretting about review content and deadlines and such.

When using Mac OS 9, I kinda go off the grid. My main Linux desktop computer is turned off and I plug the mouse, keyboard and speakers into the Mac and use the same monitor I use for modern computing. This is the most comfortable way to play for me, but it also is kind of isolating, feeling stuck in the year 2000 without access to things like Discord or actually usable web browsers

I enjoy doing it, but it's also maybe a bit unhealthy to do for long extended periods of time like this, to the extent that all of my gaming time period is poured into Mac OS 9 when I'm focused on keeping up a review schedule. I definitely intend to return later and do more Mac reviews (still so many more I want to cover!) but need a break for now.

Anyway to close this off, thanks to everyone who has followed over the last few weeks and has been interested in my site and reviews. It means a ton to me and makes me really happy that covering such a niche subject matter as retro Mac games can still generate some interest, even among those who are unfamiliar with classic Macs.

Thank you I'm glad to have had an effect! There is a great and easy emulator called Arculator but yes, no subsitute for having a go on the old clunky hardware again.
