If you are looking for a mecha series that is dark and emotional, then watch Densetsu Kyojin Ideon, more commonly known simply as Ideon, it have widely been recognized for its visuals and storytelling and is believed to have inspired Neon Genesis Evangelion in many ways. ... up in the second half of the series. The Yuusha series in general is considered a spiritual successor to Transformers, so this may serve as a good gauge for what to expect the series to be like.

@digital-devil Cool robots you say? Maybe you should try Red Baron an anime about a robot fighting tournament. Looking for a good vs evil story with many twists and turns? Then try The Big O or Gun x Sword.
@pklucky Have you seen Hokuto no Ken, it seems to fit the bill for everything that you want. Other series include Golden Kamuy and Baki (both are more recent). I would additionally recommend the manga for Baoh, since the anime is not that good, unless you are looking for a laugh from comical dub lines (no subtitles available to my knowledge).
