I think more important than money, the reason is power. The Internet served to destroy location bound culture, but interest bound culture took its place, and that works as a basis for anti-homogeneity sentiment. Those who seek humans to become interchangeable units of human capital (in the case of capitalists, or tabula rasa creatures in the case of liberals and progressives) dislike that very much.
