Ladies, gentlemen, and neocitizens: those of you who switched to a static site generator, how much hell was that transition?

I want consistent control over headers/footers, but I also have at least 3 totally distinct "sub-sites" that I don't want to mess with, and do NOT want to have to convert my stuff to markup.

I used a static site generator for my blog, and it was, quite frankly, a *massive* pain in the arse to update β€” that’s why I switched away from Neocities for the actual hosting side of things, because I just wanted to use WordPress and get it over with. I also used an SSG for some other pages but it turned out to be easier to just edit raw HTML in the long run

Actually a preprocessor, but piss-easy: http://htp.sourceforge.net/ - pretty simple, works on only the files you specify. Gets pages looking the same, or you can use if-else statements in the template for variation. Custom macros, too. Is nice.

taking a webware class and it's making me want to tear this dang thing down and start from scratch. Hmmm....

I will not do this on the live site of course (rule of webmastermancy no. 1: NO UNDER CONSTRUCTION PAGES. Unless you are editing IN the browser, a page is on the live web when it is finished, or not at all.)

(generally, rule zero should be "edit offline" but this is neocities. rule negative one is make your site however you damn please, if at the end of the day you've created something new that you like and can show to other people. Hobbyists are allowed to pick and choose which rules to follow and break.)

If you decide to change your site in any major way I'd love to still have access to ye old bluef00t page, or have it still be up in some way? Ofc this is your site tho, dont let me tell u what to do (i just like archiving/viewing old pages)

Oh, expect 95% of the same content, and at least the *option* to view it in the old CSS style. I just want to make everything properly spaced, alt-texted, validated, and future-proofed.

I'd love to remake my site structure and front page and.... frankly the entire site, but life is coming at me fast lately so who knows how long that will take. back for now, though.

I suppose things move slowly in neocitiesland, a lovely thing, frankly

indeed β€” it's wonderful being able to take an extended period off of tending to one's site and come back like nothing happened
