There are a lot of private prisons in my state and a lot of cities and towns couldn't survive if they had to pay actual wages instead of contracting out literal slave labor. The largest egg producer in the Southwest is located here and, until avian flu wiped out their flocks, was heavy into using prison labor. It's fucking horrible and barbaric.
