I went with Google fonts because I was having too many headaches trying to get otf/tff files to work consistently across browsers. Some of them just seemed to hate Firefox, Chrome, Edge or all three no matter what I did! I think it is just a matter of preference though.

same with kuupzone I use Google fonts because it's easy and I'm lazy. some people prefer the font file because it means you're in better control of how everything looks. externally hosting fonts means if Google takes down that font or moves it or renames it, it no longer works on your site. I don't know how often Google does that but I can see the value of keeping everything on your site in your site.

Possibly for the reasons above! For me personally, I also use custom fonts for my site, I just like the control better and placing my font files my self.
