I remember hotel breakfasts in California when I was there. (yes, not just one hotel) We were told there were great breakfast menus:(

The ultimate chip shame is reaching the crumbs at the bottom and using the bag to funnel them directly into your mouth. Also, if we’re allowing foods with origins elsewhere, I’d add Tex Mex to the list. It’s just as popular as pizza and significantly more delicious.

oh, Smiling Friends doesn't make me smile. Like I've watched a bunch of compilations of it and it's not really funny. But it's also not really uh... bad, I think it's an ok show. I liked the bit where Bill Nye gets electrocuted, that was cool. And I did appreciate a bit where a bookshelf has The God Delusion and all the books surrounding it are science books for children. And Cosmos. That's like something I'd write.

Joel Berry is peak ""Judeo-Christian." He's the type of person who thinks you could convince third-world migrants to vote for "small government conservatism" by simply "winning the debate" or some bullshit. Deeply unserious individual.

Any tips for when I eventually try getting back to reading? I don't think I've touched a normal book in at least five years 😅
Oh man, I really went overboard these past few months... I mean the audiobooks + not having a job combo is doing wonders for me as you can see. Ereader with the dyslexia font is also nice. But yeah I was in need of escapism this season, I don't usually read this much. For real though, reading before bed, even if it's just for a few minutes is what got me back into reading, it's really relaxing !
Also being obsessed with the Realm of the Elderlings books will force you to read a lot. Also, read what you like. If you're into sci-fi, or period drama or whatever kind of tv shows or movies or vibes, find books in the same genre. I know some people make reading this intimidating thing and even though I'm obviously in favor of critical thinking, I don't think forcing hierarchies on books/readers is really relevant
So yeah figure out what interests you, read just a little bit whenever you have time and before bed, maybe write in your books, it's fun and get into audiobooks. And of course read every Robin Hobb book there is
From the video games you like, maybe you might enjoy The Murderbot Diaries ? I've only read the first one but it was short and sweet :)
Thanks for the advice :). I especially like sci-fi, near future and "alternate" (fantasy, horror or whatever) present, also some straight-up fantasy, so I might start by looking there. The Murderbot books actually sound pretty interesting!
It hit me not too long ago that books are the form where a single person can probably drive their own vision most independently. Not that I don't absolutely love the sort of many people involving, media rich work that makes up what I usually play/read/watch, but that comes with more compromises, budgets, targets and oversight. In the end, it's good to have balance.
You're welcome, it's really my pleasure :) Yeah for sure try Murderbot ! Other than that, I haven't read a lot of sci-fi but from what you said (and because it's one of my favourite books) maybe Piranesi by Susanna Clarke? It's set in some kind of alternative present, in a strange house, it's eerie and beautiful! On a more lighthearted note there's Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries
It's a fun fantasy series set in the early 20s where the study of faeries is a real academia field. It's great neurotypical representation, I LOVED Emily. The first book is better than the rest, but they're all nice.
And yeah, I totally agree with you! There is something so magical about reading and living a story through words. Reading something that could not exist as well in another form. Picturing places and people in your head and having them with you always. I adore movies, tv-shows and games but books are something else. It's guided dreaming. Also it can be quite afforable with libraries, used books stores, ebooks even
I mean there's always piracy of course, but I like to pay for the things I loved!
For Emily Wilde, I meant early 20th century, oopsie
I'll look into the other recs, they both sound interesting :). I also brought two books I read when I was younger over from mom's place, so I might begin there – Knights of Forty Islands, which I finished several times, and Ve Službách Klanu, which I haven't, but they're miners – and everything that combines sci-fi/fantasy with a primary industry is one of those quick cheats to get my interest :D
And thanks for the "guided dreaming" comment, you spurred me to get a move on with a TRPG group I've put together for some fantasy adventuring :). And I should kick the regular stuff I'm making into gear as well, while I'm at it..
I hope you like them, don't hesitate to tell me about it if you read them! Ah reading books from your childhood is such a good idea, I collected The Spiderwick Chronicles, A Series of Unfortunate Events, His Dark Materials, stuff like that a few years ago, they're so nice to re-read ! You make me want to read sci-fi actually. OH! Project Hail Mary, god what an incredible book, it converted my boyfriend to audiobook!
And I'm so glad! TTRPG do tickle something similar to reading in the brain. I hope you have fun :)
