I've been taking a break from here for a few days since I did a lot of work on the site last week. I'll probably start on the thrid episode later on this week, but I've a lot of things to do around the home.
I found some of your articles interesting, particularly the origin of the 88x31 button. I first came across it on fan sites where people made them for others to download and link back to their sites. Always found it a frustrating size to make though because there's not a lot of room on it. I've found other sizes are used as well - 100 x 50 (my prefered one), 50 x 50, 50 x 75, 100 x 35, and 200 x 40.

Got the interfacing done on the bunting I'm making. Was expecting it to be a disaster. We'll see...

Well, I was wanting to buy some plant pots this year to replace the ones that have been broken, cracked, etc, but everywhere seems to only have these ugly grey ones that will make your garden look like you've used old buckets or a building site where everything is covered in grey dust and cement.

First day of Crufts was great, but there is only so much you can watch before you get sleepy and I know from experience that I usually miss the flyball because of this issue, so I'm done for the day.
I just realised that from tomorrow and over the weekend Crufts is on, so I'm going to be watching that with my dog. (The Agility and Flyball comps, mainly...) Only comes once a year so...

It will probably be next week before I do anything else on here. I want to do some gardening (if the weather is nice this weekend), some tidying up/cleaning and some crafty projects. Now that we're moving towards spring, it should be easier for me to do that kind of stuff. I will probably start decorating the flat again once it's dry enough outside.

The flat is small, so I need to put things outside sometimes to get things done otherwise I've no room and it needs to be dry (and warm) to do that.
Feeling quite tired now. I did handwrite Lyndheid's history. It needs typing up and headers putting in to break it up to make it easier to read. I also need to write the last part properly. At the moment, it's only notes. Somethimes these things take several sessions to complete.

I don't think that I shall bother hosting the fanlistings here. I can't use php script on here, and finding a mailing service that people can use to join/update/contact isn't that easy these days. I'm just going to concentrate on the fansites/fan fic stuff, the pixel art site (as I only need to upload it and change links.) I may do the icon site, too, but it's not a priority.

(The problem with the icon site is that the php script on it stopped working due to it becoming old, and having to link all the images individually is a chore, and that's before you take into consideration that php can't be used on here.)

In relation to fanlistings, I stopped being interested in them ages ago, but kept them around out of habit. From a personal standpoint, they aren't that interesting to me to make and the TFL community is very elitist and can be toxic.

I need to do some more research into an aspect of Lyndheid's history, to make sure that it is correct, but I need to take a break from it. You have to make sure when you're doing backgrounds, etc, that your dates and everything match up. One of the things I found in rp was that people who didn't bother to read the LOTR and the Hobbit and only watched the films just made things up for characters.

You can tell when they don't bother mention certain events (or in one case I found), came up with excuses about why their character's background was wrong. Even if the character was too young to be involved in events, they would still have an effect on the character and be mentioned if it's relavanet.
I do have a tendency to make my profiles very long, but I like to get all of my ideas down before I forget them. Whether they become proper, complete stories is another matter though as writing them properly takes a long time. These days, a lot of published writing isn't that good because the pressure put on authors to produce by their publishers is high.

I see how the work of some writers that I used to read has suffered greatly because they work on too many projects every year.
I just had a look on an old twitter profile that deals with what's wrong in how people behave in RP. A few weeks ago, I looked on a resource site which I used to post on regularly too. Same old problems still exist in both spheres of rp. (Twitter probably worse, though...) It made me realise something.

People get into rp on the internet because they like to tell stories and want to tell stories. Sometimes, it's their own original stuff, sometimes it's because they like a fandom and want to 'play' in that world. Doesn't matter which. But they could just write original fiction or fan fic if they just wanted to write stories.

No. Instead they want to rp - they want interaction, usually because they realise that something is missing in their life and they need to fill it. That in itself isn't bad, but there are people out there who like to hurt and manipulate people. (They probably have something missing in their life too, or have suffered abuse.) Enter those, and rp becomes an awful thing to be in.

I’m sorry... yeah, there’s a lot of creepy, awful folks sometimes, and yeah, rp is very appealing if you’re isolated and have trouble making friends. I rarely write fic anymore, but I probably should do that more!

Don't give up writing! I got into rp because I played DnD and other games at uni and it was great. I thought I'd find the same thing online, but soon found out that it wasn't like that at all. In the end, I found writing alone was better for me. I'm just astounded that rp itself has not really changed.
I think tomorrow, I shall finish writing Lyndheid's profile. Should have done it /ages/ ago, but had too many distractions.

And tomorrow, I'll be taking a break from doing stuff on the site. It's been a long day getting the character profile template right.

I've also come across 120 X 60 (very rare) and for top sites directories there's also a 480 x 100 one. I hate the really small ones though because it's hard to make them look great and still fit text on them.
i was frustrated by the size as well, it's not the most convenient thing. i think i was interested in doing a 90x30 revival before i started archiving buttons. 100x50, you say? that seems like something fun to experiment with for higher-res buttons... i'll look into it

The sizes I've mentioned were probably invented by the fanlistings community, but they have certainly been used on fan sites quite a lot, and the personal sites of those who make fanlistings. I remember making some really mis matched ones (size wise) when I first started making fan sites because I didn't realise people could crop images. Pixel fonts are used a lot on them too.
I believe for modern screens, we really need a new standard to replace 88x31, but I'm not sure how it can be agreed upon by a wide community.
I agree the 88x31 is too small and a bit annoying to design. I briefly wondered if the Hosted by Neocities button could provide inspiration, but it's an odd size (200x59). I think something like a 100x50 banner exchange has a chance of trending here on Neocities though.
2OO x 59 is a bit too big in my opinion. Just tested it out and I can't see a page of those side by side. I think 100 x 50 has the advantage because it's commonly used among fanlistings and if folks who do that make a site here then they'll probably use it. (The drawback is lack of php and database sites - most FLs these days use that to manage them, but a fan site which doesn't need it could work.)
