Further update: I'm planning for two more Mac reviews before taking a hiatus for a bit, both of which are games I've already beaten and gotten screenshots of, so just a matter of writing the reviews and editing the html. I think I need to get out of work mode for a bit and just play some games solely for fun as opposed to fretting about review content and deadlines and such.

hey there! i read your pieces on hang-on and wonder boy, i enjoyed it! hang-on was pretty decent for eventual master system kids that got it when it came baked in to the bios. also i i knew that some scarce few rocks in wonder boy hide the dolls but i didn't know the hatchet goes through them lol. looking forward to reading your thoughts on nectaris when i get around to playing it on my turbografx

Thank you! Read your page on Shining in the Darkness. I definitely consider the dungeon itself the highlight of that game and also drew my own maps. I think enjoyment of that game is entirely up to how much mapping things out is fun to you vs it being a chore ahaha

Great stuff, Civ II was my entry point but it seems like its all present and correct here. I'm a big supporter of playing at easier difficulties, the goal is to have fun (and now we're grown-ups we don't have the time!). Also, Egyptian Spaceship.

Great review thank you! I think my younger self would have loved this back in the day, until the point you mentioned it goes from strategy into puzzle. I always get disappointed when that happens, not that I don't love a puzzle game but it feels like a different itch to scratch.

I think the puzzle direction the game later goes into was somewhat inevitable due to it being the only way to really increase challenge with the static unevolving simple mechanics for 60 levels. I enjoy puzzley strategy games (Disgaea 1 springs to mind), but I also very much love more open ended strategy games like 4X and sim games, so I get the disappointment ahaha. Glad you enjoyed the review!

Update: I am intending to resume my original schedule of weekly Mac reviews for the immediate future! I'll upload a new review every Friday (NZ time) until further notice. I've got the next review finished already and two more reviews are nearly done, so I'll be able to at least keep this up for a month at this pace.

Pipe Dream on Windows 95 is the version i'm most familiar with. It had bright green flooz instead of pink.

@pixelglade It's slightly odd that the flooz isn't green in the Mac version tbh, though I'm not as familiar with how the 4 color mode palettes work on Mac OS Classic. Had to catch myself instinctively typing "green flooz" into the review because I kept forgetting it was pink in the Mac version after looking at other ports to compare!

There were so many knockoffs of Pipe Dream I think many were trying to distinguish themselves from the original by changing the colours. Also in the process of looking up the colour palette for classic mac os I learned about old monitors using RGB565 colours which is absolutely fascinating.

Late response, but I was just looking through your Tomb Raider pages again. I completely agree with the bit on Thames Wharf! The Windows 9x and I believe Mac OS Classic original versions of Tomb Raider 3 also both have more remastered-esque lighting as well, it seems to be only the PS1 version that has the cool deep blue glow to everything. It's a shame since they're otherwise superior to the PS1 version

ohhh, i see! thanks for letting me know! i didn't know it was a ps1 thing only. it's such a cool lighting, it makes everything so mysterious! 💗💫 i wonder why the difference.. maybe something about the hardware. thank u for sharing!! ^^

When using Mac OS 9, I kinda go off the grid. My main Linux desktop computer is turned off and I plug the mouse, keyboard and speakers into the Mac and use the same monitor I use for modern computing. This is the most comfortable way to play for me, but it also is kind of isolating, feeling stuck in the year 2000 without access to things like Discord or actually usable web browsers
I enjoy doing it, but it's also maybe a bit unhealthy to do for long extended periods of time like this, to the extent that all of my gaming time period is poured into Mac OS 9 when I'm focused on keeping up a review schedule. I definitely intend to return later and do more Mac reviews (still so many more I want to cover!) but need a break for now.
Anyway to close this off, thanks to everyone who has followed over the last few weeks and has been interested in my site and reviews. It means a ton to me and makes me really happy that covering such a niche subject matter as retro Mac games can still generate some interest, even among those who are unfamiliar with classic Macs.
