regarding tim, our perspectives are perhaps kind of strange because we were both obsessed with him wayyy back (i was 16 i think when i first started reading his work) and then have turned pretty sour on him (at least in my case), as often happens with people you idolize during such formative years... I didn't really want to get into all that in the letters though

What Augustine proposed that rape though evil was conducive towards producing a greater good, that good being life. Meanwhile masturbation is worse because it produces no good. That said, I believe he speaks hyperbolically, as it's NOT preferable for bandits to rove. Taking these two extremes, Augustine settles, that if one were to sin in this way, a prostitute would be best.

Anyhow, you'd be right. The tonic is marrying or being alone, which is what we do. Doctors of the Church tend to grapple with rather obsure questions however.
