Made the mistake of going to town yesterday. Mistake in that it the place was full of idiots not taking covid seriously. Although I have missed shopping and going to places, I have not missed encountering idiots.

Ordering some more items from Hobby Craft and I am perplexed as to why crafters bother with cricut products because they are so expensive. Does the crafting hobby have a set of Hyacinth Buckets who just buy a ton of expensive things just to show people that they've got it?

What I will do soon is share some of the more interesting art and craft youtube channels that I have come across. They are so inspiring (but be warned - they may make you want to buy more supplies.) I will only be sharing the ones which I think encourage people to use their stash, or have ideas for recycling waste, & show their viewers that they actually use their supplies, & ones which show you how to make things,

art tutorials, etc, rather than just endless 'what I bought' videos. I don't have the technical knowledge (or confidence) to make my own videos, would like to share ones which I've found useful.

There is also a site called Skillshare which seems to be good at encouraging people to try new things but that requires a subscription. These don't, so they might be more helpful to those who can't afford to sign up to subscription sites.

I have found a lot of art supplies that I would like to try over the next few months. It is nice to get back into a creative spot with it - it had waned when we lost Jaffa and I didn't feel like doing it for a very long time.
If there is one thing I don't like, it's the idea of dog crates for your dog. I've never used them. I don't really see the need for them and they have the potential to be mis-used. Dogs aren't meant to be kept shut up in a tiny cage and I am perplexed as to why some people think that they are necessary. In contrast, there is a big movement among rabbit keepers to stop using cages and hutches to keep rabbits in and
bright-eyes 3 years ago

allow them to wander about the house. If keeping rabbits in a confined space isn't good for them, why do people think that it's OK for dogs?

birdsandstars 3 years ago

Had a family member who thought every pet we had was ~unclean~ and hated that they could make messes, even if it was easy to clean up after them. I hated getting pets because she'd find any reason to cast them outside in those tiny crates/cages and they'd eventually miserably waste away and no one can oppose her narcissistic tyranny. She also refused to understand any of that was bad for them. It was depressing.

birdsandstars 3 years ago

Worst thing is, she showed up MANY years after we had cats, then tossed them all out in cages (PERSIAN CATS in the Saudi heat!!!), or she'd be fine with a rabbit wanderig at first, then no, cage only, and the poor rabbit got blisters that got infected because it was confined to this area with stairs and no rug or soft anything to tread on. Just so much horrific imposed neglect.

bright-eyes 3 years ago

It's just awful. Some people build an outdoor cattery in the garden if they don't want the cat to roam around. Even over here, cats are horribly neglected because people just let them out to wander, don't bother having their vaccines done, don't have them neutered or spayed, so they end up living half wild and forming feral colonies, or people just allow them to over breed so there are loads around the house. Without

bright-eyes 3 years ago

proper veterinary care, they become really sick or spread disease among themselves. It's very sad. The catteries are great if they are constructed properly and cleaned regularly, but not everyone has the resources or space to build them. Rabbits aren't very easy to care for, either, because they need a lot more than people think they need, and a lot of the housing you can get for them is poor quality, and rots very

bright-eyes 3 years ago

easily. We also have foxes (I don't blame them, because it's not their fault,) that can get to them if the housing for them isn't secured. People also abandon them quite regularly, too, especially at this time of year. People get them for their children, but the children stop caring for them when they go back to school, weather becomes nasty, so no one wants to clean them out. I no longer have any 'caged' animals

bright-eyes 3 years ago

because we don't have the room to care for them. I wish people were more thoughtful before they get animals, make sure that they have everything the animal needs and can continue to care for them right before they get them, and that companies making things for animals were more regulated so that they make better products for them. I even have to be careful about the toys that I get Max because he can easily chew

bright-eyes 3 years ago

through them. Kong toys are about the only ones I find now that are tough enough to hold up to his chewing. The quality of dog toys seem to have got worse since the '90's, not better.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-58560031 In other words, lockdown will become the norm, once again. When the government drags it's heels over vaccinating kids and idiots go into shops without wearing facemasks (as happened today when I went to the shop), you can see why it's needed once again.
This coming Monday will be Max's anniversary of bringing him home from the rescue we got him from.
And that is October's issue of Cross Stitcher ordered. (Always my fave edition of the mag - for some reason, the best designs seem to always be saved up for the October edition. Of course, other folks will like different things from me, and that's fine, but there always seems to be more designs I like in this edition than in all the others. I might not get it again until the New Year though. From November onwards,
bright-eyes 3 years ago

it's usually full of Christmas designs until the edition that comes out in January, and there is only so much festive stuff I can take. I also have lots of mags from 10 years ago that had lots of Christmas designs in them so I don't really want any more, unless there is a design that really catches my eye, which sometimes (but rarely) happens.

I do get the feeling that some dresses I ordered from a certain catalogue company will either end up not being delivered, or will turn up just before Christmas.
Damn, damn, damn.... I placed an order at Hobby Craft today and meant to order some gesso, and some double-sided tape (the double-sided tape I need for filling my scrapbook with loose art pages...) Guess who forgot to add them to the order? Ermmm? Silly, since I've been wanting the double sided tape for ages and ages, and wanted to order it...

I've just come across one of the most bizarre comments I have ever seen regarding a company - the company allegedly gives bad service to customers of a certain political persuasion. As you are ordering online, how the heck is the company supposed to know what your political beliefs are just by your name, etc... Very weird...
bright-eyes 3 years ago

And I am also sure that their employees have better things to do than look you up on social media to see what your beliefs are. (And it's kind of strange, too, since, as it's a US cross stitch supplier, I always get the impression from the designs that you commonly come across that most people who cross stitch in the US have a Conservative persuasion since there are a lot of patriotic,

bright-eyes 3 years ago

religious and hunting themes in the designs. It's a strange viewpoint to have.

People are just twits. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-58518892 ... Max is one of those 'teenage' puppies, and of a breed that is allegedly one of the most difficult, being a Border Collie. We have no problems with him. When we first adopted him last year, the previous owners had piled on a load of 'issues' that he was supposed to have had that could have resulted in him getting put down if the wrong rescue had taken

taken him on. Mostly, he was just bored and scared because he'd been locked up on his own for hours on end, and sometimes behaved like he'd been mistreated. I just hope none of these folks have kids, or need to care for a chronically ill/elderly relative because if they can't cope with a puppy, they wouldn't be able to cope with that. Most of these 'issues' that dogs have are dogs just being dogs and the problem is

I'm convinced most people are incapable of empathy. Most symptoms of autism that autistic children and adults are punished for are also obvious signs of being mistreated. People expect everyone to be perfect and then brutally kick their maladies under the rug if they aren't.

If not lacking in empathy, I think people can certainly disregard the feelings and welfare of other people (and animals) when it suits them to do so.

I always find October's issue of Cross Stitcher to be the best one in the year. Can't wait to order it next week...
I get tired of people complaining about Amazon making affordable things. This time, it is art supplies. Whatever you think of Amazon, I've found the company to be very useful to me. I wouldn't have access to most of the books that I read if I didn't buy them from there. Most high street shops don't stock a good range/say you can't get it if you try to order it/over stock on 'popular bestsellers' and nothing else.

If Amazon have their own brand of art supplies that help people out who are short on money, can't get to the shops because of the pandemic, etc, then is there any need to complain? They are just very good at providing a service so people can get hold of items which would be hard to come by otherwise. For over a year now, I have been confined to my small village and none of the shops stock a good range of art supplies

and stationary, at least not that which would be helpful to an artist. The company is a life line for people who are vulnerable.

koshka 3 years ago

I detest Amazon for how they exploit their workers and small businesses, but I admit they're a life-saver for a lot of things, namely books like you said. It seems like physical stores only stock "safe" mainstream books, not the things I actually like to read. That and as a male that wears a lot of pink, Amazon is pretty much the only place I can find clothing I actually like.

It's been years since I found a decent bookshop. The good independent ones have either closed, or are too far away. As for high street chains, the only /real/ bookshop that I've been in has been Blackwells in Oxford. The local library I find has pretty much either dumbed down its collection, has damaged books in it (seriously, I stopped checking books out because people had torn pages out of them so you couldn't read

them properly) or they don't have what I want. Wasn't always that way but the last time I looked in the zoology section, the books there should have been in the children's section, not the adults!

Crybullies, I think the term is.

Spent the morning sorting out a bookcase, some side tables and cleaning a craft drawer tower that I plan to upcycle for my paints, etc, in preparation for my new (and hopefully, more organised) workspace. The tower is an ugly black colour which might have been to my liking when I was 14, but which now I find depressing. (I do like gothic things, by the way, but I hate the black and grey workshop look, especially
bright-eyes 3 years ago

when I have to stare it at when I'm not working.) But the tower is a lucky find.

One problem which I am struggling with at the moment is motivating myself to cook properly. This is in due partly to my diabetes - you get to the point where you feel like you shouldn't be eating anything at all because where-ever you look, there is some 'research' that tells you whatever food item you eat is bad. The other issue is that from 2018 - 2020 we lost a dog each year around the same same time (Jaffa and
