I'm on something of a poasting blitz but I'll say one last thing — one important thing i've learnt is that Neocities is much more tolerable if you just never look at the global activity page. No weirdos, no depressing blogs, no fansites for animes you've never heard of, no (rare, but there) actual literal neonazis — it’s generally just a much nicer experience when you stay in your own little circle.

I like Obsidian, you're meant to have all these weird complicated backlinks between tiny little documents but I just use it like a souped-up notepad

holocene ideas?

Ahhh — I used to have a page on my site of a history of the world in the Holocene era calendar (the current year plus 10,000, basically), trying to put the scale of human history in perspective. I scrapped it because, well, i am just one person, with my own biases and knowledge-gaps, and i couldn't realistically expect myself to ever cover every major event

That sounds like something I could try. I've collected a bunch of history notes since I learned about the holocene calendar years ago. - Also, I found that page by guessing the url.

The interesting thing would be seeing how ancient dates change, modern ones are pretty obvious.

I actually used to use it across the site, before i realised that i just didn’t talk about ancient dates enough for it to be worth the alienation — and even for those ancient dates, it rendered them unrecognisable to the lay reader.

Recently saw another site (I believe they follow me — if the webmaster is reading this, hi 🙂) describe me as one of the “earliest sites in the small web movement”, or something of the sort, and honestly it was quite strange — i don’t really think of myself as being… part of any kind of movement? I’m just making a personal website because it’s fun and i have the resources to do it, same as anyone else way back when.

I don’t really partake in the broader “community” of people who are very much About Making Personal Sites: i’m not on any Discords or Mastoda or Pleromæ or Blorbochats or what have you, i don’t have a guestbook, i’ve tried to be restrained with the more Geocitiesque elements, i try to steer clear of meta-commentary about The State Of Ye Web and technology… it doesn’t feel right being lumped in with them. 🤔

i think at this point people assume any webmaster on neocities has some affiliation with the yesterweb movement and things like that, probably because the yesterweb sentiment is the reason neocities exists

Not posting this on the site because then I’d be what we in the industry call a massive hypocrite but it gets on my nerves when I see a cool-looking website and then the only content on it is about how much they miss Le Old Web before they invented capitalism or whatever. It was a cool fun new idea a few dozen sites ago but please I'm begging you just write about gardening or Zootopia fanfiction or something

What makes the free web beautiful is the sheer diversity in topics covered and how the little idiosyncracies and quirks in people's interests shine through — it makes me a little sad how most sites in the modern revival movement are just lamenting about their own existence!

Its great to hear this comming from you. You were one of the driving influences for me starting this website! i tried doing stuff on neocities before but was not very good at it, and didnt keep it updated. this time around i am more motivated to keep it going, so hopefully you find the things to come on the website interesting

To reduce load on my end, I have decided to (probably) stop crossposting updates from my main site to Neocities. Viva la free web, et cetera! RSS feeds and the option of just checking it every so often will remain available. :-)

This post was originally accompanied by an extensive, extensive rant about some imaginary stereotypical Neocities website but it was such a flagrant violation of my "no cynicism" policy and really the only reason I hammered it out was to get it out of my system and because I'd had a shit day; my apologies
