Geocities was where I made the first site - didn't even have a debit card in those days so paying for hosting wasn't an option. Then I liked the flexibilty of bravenet when I found it, then went on to paid hosting for a while but the problem with that is keeping up the payments. I'm going to move everything to neocities and this will be my last year with that host and become a supporter here.
I was excited about using wordpress, forum software and other types of software, but it always seemed to distract from making content. I won't miss php and other scripts.
Same here with GeoCitites being where i made my first site :D Bravenet i found by accident maybe 5months or something before GeoCities shut down. i was thinking of using Bravenet as a host but at the time had too much in real life going on an my webpage making days went by the wayside many a year later until i stumbled upon NeoCities. maybe one day i'll become a supporter as well :D
Wordpress i havent dipped my toes into but maybe i should one day just to see what it is like :D
I've also come across 120 X 60 (very rare) and for top sites directories there's also a 480 x 100 one. I hate the really small ones though because it's hard to make them look great and still fit text on them.
i was frustrated by the size as well, it's not the most convenient thing. i think i was interested in doing a 90x30 revival before i started archiving buttons. 100x50, you say? that seems like something fun to experiment with for higher-res buttons... i'll look into it
(also wow i did not expect to be linked at the bottom of that 88x31 article!! thanks neonaut!!)
The sizes I've mentioned were probably invented by the fanlistings community, but they have certainly been used on fan sites quite a lot, and the personal sites of those who make fanlistings. I remember making some really mis matched ones (size wise) when I first started making fan sites because I didn't realise people could crop images. Pixel fonts are used a lot on them too.
I believe for modern screens, we really need a new standard to replace 88x31, but I'm not sure how it can be agreed upon by a wide community.
I agree the 88x31 is too small and a bit annoying to design. I briefly wondered if the Hosted by Neocities button could provide inspiration, but it's an odd size (200x59). I think something like a 100x50 banner exchange has a chance of trending here on Neocities though.
2OO x 59 is a bit too big in my opinion. Just tested it out and I can't see a page of those side by side. I think 100 x 50 has the advantage because it's commonly used among fanlistings and if folks who do that make a site here then they'll probably use it. (The drawback is lack of php and database sites - most FLs these days use that to manage them, but a fan site which doesn't need it could work.)

That site was so addicting and not not a good time for me. ^^;;; I loved the format, loved what I learned, made some friends, but oooof, it was so hivemind-y and toxic.
I never actually interacted with anyone on there that much, but I remembered submitting a profile or two to a site that was supposed to be an index for middle-earth rpers and never got a response from the admins. Most of the time I didn't get any followers either. It suited me in some ways because I like the flexibilty it has over facebook when it comes to layout design and such.
Also, it would have been better than twitter for rp because you could create multiple tumblrs for your characters, and I did use it as a placeholder for my characters on twitter because I could put more information on those pages. But I have heard bad stories about 'trendy lefties' (folks who pile on and bully people who oppose their stance on politics, etc, while they claim to be socialists or feminists.
But last night, I was mainly annoyed with it because I had trouble logging in and it was slow to load.
Aaaah, yeah, the weird soapboxing and call-outs and no room for mistakes or growth, you can make multiple twitters! But hard. gmail e-mails let you do yourname+whatever@gmail.com and it counts as different e-mails! But when they ask for phone numbers and you have to break up long replies
it’s a bit of a pain! Plus, twitter is very, very, very... cracky, thirsty, bizarrely depraved (I kept getting explicit l*li and sh*ta and f*ta and oversexualized Pokemon creatures themselves even).
I think rpers on twitter are more relaxed, usually, and not too big on writing, so you get a lot of folks who don’t put effort into writing or even characterization and just say crass stuff and tweet memes. Bizarre. livejournal/dreamwidth was best for overall quality and structure (and folks stick to canon, not straying as much as tumblr).
