my two favourite movies are the handmaiden (2016) and children of men (2006) and they're amazing and have very hopeful messages but so much horrible stuff happens in both of them lmao. I always have to give like 10 prior warnings when I reccomend them 😭
Not really *never* recommend some works that I feel are valuable pieces of media but I would be careful about recommending: Berserk (extreme content, heavy themes), Aku no Hana (story centers on a very abusive relationship), Devilman Crybaby (misc extreme content), Goblin Slayer (rape/torture), Gantz (content warnings for pretty much everything)...
Sparklecare Hospital is my favorite webcomic of all time. It's a very powerful webcomic with a message about the abuse and mistreatment of patients in psychiatric wards by the hospital staff. But I feel like I have to give everyone I recc it to abt 50 warnings, because the way that they portray this abuse is through gore and torture used as metaphors. It's also eyestrain heavy, although that is also a metaphor
I also really love Midnight Mass for its commentary on religious trauma and abuse, but, given that it's a horror miniseries, I have to give a ton of warnings. I don't think that there's something I wouldn't recc to someone without warnings though.
i still reccomend perfect blue to people even after it put me in a month-long dissociation episode so..hmm. LISA THE PAINFUL its such a gritty ass game but the way it deals with generational cycles of abuse and other heavy themes is both really good and really disturbing. its also really hard to get through, hence the title, but its still one of my Games Of All Time tbh
I do not have any limits, but usually, unless I feel they can handle extreme content, then I will not personally recommend stuff like Mad Bull 34, Angel Cop and some videos of people getting killed that were on LiveLeak (R.I.P).
i really like school-live!, but i could never recommend it to anyone because it had me messed up for months afterwards lmao
revolutionary girl utena i actually do recommend despite the difficult content it has but its not without a million caveats and content warnings. if im recommending it directly to someone i have to feel out their boundaries first to see if its something they would be interested in/comfortable watching. same thing applies to the handmaiden that plasticdino mentioned as well.
scum's wish i really enjoyed but i dont usually recommend it because it's really heavy and involves underaged characters in sexual situations..
Céline's "Death on the Installment Plan" is one of the most vulgar and raunchy novels ever written and simultaneously perhaps one of the greatest of the first half of the 20th century.
The original Oldboy movie, it has really dark themes and the plot essentially has a lot to do with incest. I wouldn't call it pleasant, even though I enjoyed watching it.
