the freedom of writing in raw HTML is great. If you're willing to handle the learning curve a static site generator (there are several, I use 11ty) allow the freedom of HTML but remove the overhead of managing it all manually
I also left Wordpress to make a HTML blog and I don't regret it either.
Totally agree with both of you! It takes a little more work, but is very much worth it!
