As a rule you want to keep it same tab unless you specify that it's gonna open a new one, personally I just middle click stuff
I also usually middle click images if they have links attached; if an image opens in the same tab I'd prefer that it opens in a popup on the same page; if it's just a link to the image then I'd prefer having it in another tab instead of having to go back in the same tab which is less seamless to me.
new tab personally, ditto what saint said tho if it's gonna be in the same tab then it should be a pop-up
interesting to see a mix of answers here. i'll probably end up having all images & internal links open in the same tab, and any outbound links open in a new tab
mainly bc like saint-images mentioned, middle click exists if you wanna open smth in a new tab, but if something opens in a new tab by default there's not a way to open in the same tab
i do kinda wana use popups just bc i've been infatuated with the concept of them forever, but there's no way i'd ever be able to get them to work how i'd want em to
