Thank you for posting this. As someone who found the yesterweb right as it was imploding, I have been trying to piece together what happened because I also found the entire thing very bizarre.
The way it was structured, I think it was doomed from the start. You can't essentially create an organisation (esp a hierarchal one, which is what HAPPENS with fandoms, even those with the best intentions and people active in them) from a movement, especially a movement that should by its nature mean different things for everyone. I'm sure a lot of people hate me for saying that, but eh. *shrug*
Taking what is essentially an anarchistic movement and imposing a rigid structure upon it, is completely illogical and, as demonstrated, ultimately self defeating. Taking peoples' happy, creative, interactive space and subverting it with a secret agenda of control and dogmatic indoctrination is shitbaggery at its worst.
