i'm still relatively new at this website making stuff, but what i do when drawing and i have this problem is i save what i have, and then sketch something new. So in this case, you could download all the site files and put them in a folder, and then go to town redoing it in whats basically a copy? if that makes sense?
I'd say, upload your current website files to Github. Create a separate repository for your old and new layouts. That way, your old website is still backed up somewhere. Petrapixel has a really good guide on how to use Github on her site if you don't know how.
