figured out the trick to getting those retro-futuristic layouts. instead of thinking of flexboxes as flexboxes, think of them as tables. nest them. a lot. millions. also, use images for every little thing (unless the CSS alternative is worth it)

also, don't be afraid of using JavaScript to emulate the old janky DOM manipulation Dreamweaver did. MM_DragLayer() my beloved...
Just present gargantuan JPEGs via img elements with numerous, intricately specified ismap attributes, lol
