@daughterofbilitis Thank you!!!! I will try to keep evolving the way I color and draw hair as well! <3 o7
Main update is https://angeleyesprings.neocities.org/art/TradArt/shuichi.png. Working on a general update tomorrow with some housecleaning stuff. I'm also working on writing a blurb on the differences in art style I've noticed online between Japanese / "eastern" artists and Anglosphere / "western" artists. The compare and contrast with American anime fanart or Japanese cartoon fanart interests me.
I would love to hear anyone else's thoughts too on the matter if you guys want! Hope you guys are having a good day!
I'm really excited to read your thoughts about this, this is a super interesting topic!!
Hi, Amy! I think the sense of balance in kanji has something to do with the difference, especially in the relation between lines and axis. For one example, the game Omori's art looks superficially Eastern Asian, but lacks the balance of kanji, which isn't a bad thing, as I like Omori's art!
I used to think about this a lot with pre-Avatar Western anime styled stuff, especially the Adam Warren Dirty Pair art. It looks fake-anime in a way I could never pinpoint, and back in junior high, it bothered me a lot that my own drawing had that same "fake" vibe. I'm not bothered by it as an adult, but as a kid, it drove me so crazy!
@hubbardian / slava, that's a really good point I hadn't considered before, thank you!! I've noticed lot of handwritten kanji from learners does look off because of the lack of balance between radicals (and non-handwritten radical forms and incorrect strokes and lots of other things). I bet this lack of balance really does place a role in the subtle but notable difference in "eastern" vs "western" art style!!
@miela yep, same here! My art stuff has the faux-anime vibe to it as well! I suspect that cartoons like Teen Titans or Totally Spies "held themselves back" and didn't go full anime which is why they had the fake look. I noticed that some of my friends on Tumblr started out by drawing anime, then tried branch out by drawing more distinct faces and noses. It also resulted in an unique art style.
I don't think there's anything wrong or superior / inferior with any art style by the way! I've just noticed subtle differences over time!
^ Yeah I think nowadays there's a purpuse for "style" or "trademarks" over fundamentals or beauty both in and out academia; also helped by how art isn't taken seriously in schools so children don't really develop a good sense of aesthetics.
So we got weird caricatures in an attempt to be unique and clashing colors (I wonder if the later is partially affected by superhero comics, since they use (used?) a very bright red-yellow-blue pallete due to the lack of inks at the time)
I think the lack of aesthetics knowledge is shown whenever someone/a company tries to design a cute character/plush, where they try to overcompensate by adding a bunch of spaklers and random colors/ribbons.
(That sounded very negative towards western art, sorry jfsdf But I have never liked it, as a child I avoided Cartoon Network & Nickelodeon like the plague because I thought everything was so ugly lol)
Oh I follow Saito on YT! His correction videos are so useful. Hope you reach your goal, the last drawing is very nice ⭐
@drawcia Yeah Saito's videos are awesome!! I should probably just binge watch them all!! And THANK YOU! <3
Please give me suggestions for drawing anime characters!!! Today is Kaworu: https://angeleyesprings.neocities.org/art/TradArt/kaworu.png
Hmm, how about Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket!!
@inkcaps / sarah what a wonderful idea!!!
Maomao from Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, she is my fav character
Maybe Gyalako or Un from Show by Rock? Sanrio took the mousegirls away from me
@ame I absolutely love Maomao and am super hyped for the next season!! GOOD idea! (I want to read the manga / LNs so badly...)
@drawcia YES! They really did take away these cute mascots :( I wonder if they weren't popular enough? Like the ded Sanrio Boys, RIP. BTW, is anyone very passively keeping up with the new weird Sanrio multimedia project? Some of the designs look.... not great.
They still make VR concerts for a few of the big groups and some merch as well for the others, so I guess both mobages just didn't have enough whales for their liking (?) Do you mean the knight idols one? I get what they aimed for but tbh most of them don't feel Sanrio-esque enough
YESS the knights one, Fragaria Memories. Some of the designs are very good, but I'm sad about others
