i'm fairly certain it was stephen king who started all the adverb hate, in his book "on writing". haven't read it but i've heard people repeat his advice from it to avoid adverbs at any cost many times
Adverbs can be overused and poorly used, but at this point in life I am so over prescriptivism about writing. I would not be surprised if Strunk & White had a hand in this, too. We don't always need to strip writing down to its most basic meaning. That misses the point so often.

i love adverbs. honestly my favourite part of speech. they just add so much personality
