I suppose the usecase for OC is to denote it's the author's own character, not one they borrowed from an existing piece of media. If the person is mostly in a fandom sort of environment not marking their characters as OC may often lead to them getting asked "Where is that character from?" often
I guess that in those environments just saying "my character" doesn't clarify things. That's annoying.
Refusing to optimize for mobile when you have the skills to do so is a revolutionary act, of course. :^)
