Very interesting. I had a similar childhood memory of a death screen giving me nightmares - the death bowser shadow in Super Mario 64. In my case I vaguely remember a nightmare I had where the death animation became 3d but that wasn't how the animation appeared but it made such a mark on my mind I still remember it as an adult.
somewhat less extreme, but i distinctly remember certain conditions in Mario Kart 64 where wario would say "oh i missed!" in the NA release. tcrf says it's actually "so ein mist!" and it's apparently exclusive to the japanese version. on the emulator, i've tried all possible ways of making that happen, but it just. doesn't.
