I copied all my fonts from my Windows laptop to my BSD laptop and I've never been happier. Believe it or not *fonts* were the penultimate hurdle (the final hurdle, of course, is how am I going to get my 1200 DPI scans without the proprietary software??)
I get it! Consolas and Palatino Linotype genuinely contribute to quality of life. However, copying these files is also potentially a violation of the license on the files: not something you'll get trouble for in practice at a personal scale, but bothersome. Artifex's URW 35 and the Microsoft Core fonts for the web provide a basic alternative to most of the fonts the web is built around.

Good modern designs are sometimes made free: Inconsolata, Source Serif, Gentium, Brill, Alegreya …
