I keep seeing ppl talk about how neocities is becoming more "mainstream" and worrying about more users joining. tbh I dont see how its bad to show more ppl the beauty of indie web!! Other than possible ddos attacks from bots, I dont see an issue with more ppl finding out about neocities! I saw someone leave because of how many ppl are on here like... I dont want it to be an exclusive club or smthn...
videos about indie web is great!! thats how I partially found out!! if ppl are concerned about traffic of neocities, I think it would be cool for ppl to talk about other website hosts too! like nekoweb! I want MORE artists on here to show their work!! I love feeling like I walked into their studio to see their work!! plus I can comment on their stuff without feeling the weight of social media social anxiety I have
I think while the fears shouldn't be dismissed, the reason the "mainstream" web changed from the 90s, is because tools became available to make it possible to make sites without technical knowledge. This is not a bad thing, but it means that the web became less specifically "nerdy" as a result. The different with Neocities is that it requires a level of technical proficiency to make a page.
(continued due to char limit) So while it is true that cultures on sites will always change with time and trends, Neocities, by its very infrastructure, acts as a filter of people for certain interests.
i hate gatekeeping!! i mean personal sites are very genuine, as opposed to social media platforms where ppl try to fit in to their ideas of each platform. with more ppl on nc idk how the "culture" would change at all. i think the only things that could are core nc changes, like microblogs added to global feed, not a bigger userbase of more cool genuine ppl.
