sometimes building a bit of the world helps but you don't need to have every single detail of their whole lives done right out of the gate (even if most people seem to say that's the only way lol). most people's ocs have been around for years, maybe decades, and their backstories are always changing and evolving! mine sure look absolutely nothing like what they did 10 years ago lol

sometimes its a slow cooker... sylvie took at least a year or more to actually have a more consistent background, and i still have many ocs that only have bits and bobs LOL. sometimes you do just gather bullet points of details over time

Oc backstories are always the hardest for me to get down, I focus on personality / outlook first then work backwards to see what would cause them to act like this / believe this + weave in themes and tropes until it feels right - but at the end of the day anything can be changed if you think it’ll make a better story you don’t have to be so precious with it :].

OCs are hard... I find building the world first is easier, then thinking about the type of story you want to tell, and the types of scenes you want to include, then write the character around that. I'm not an expert at writing OCs but what makes it more fun for me is if I have an idea in my head a hybrid of inspirations like... existing characters you like that are similar that you can build upon the same archetype.

this makes a lot of sense, especially the part about letting things evolve over time. i think i was putting too much pressure on getting everything 'right' from the start. thank you for the tips!! ♡(>ᴗ•)
