phd in computer science: I think something people often overlook when talking about genAI is that it's simply a product of consumerism/capitalism. It's no longer an academic pursuit, EVEN in academic AI research. Think about how its popularity has roots in the marketability of "anime" style graphics, social media filters, etc; how it preys on "conventional" rhetoric of what it means to be desirable, etc.
If you have the time, I'd recommend looking at google scholar for the most popular genAI papers and taking note of their purpose/end goal, who sponsored the research, etc. (you don't have to the whole paper or anything, tho) for a better idea
I would recommend reading what Geoffrey Hinton (the Godfather of AI and a recent Nobel Prize winner) has to say on the matter. He has been quite vocal about the existential threat of AI, especially when it's in the hands of corporations. Check out some of his interviews and articles.
