Anyway, it got me thinking about the nature of my blinkies archive. I came across one really popular blinkie creator whose website once hosted hundreds of blinkies but not a *single one* was archived by the wayback machine. I also came across defunct Tumblr blinkie creators whose blogs are not easily browsable on the wayback machine. Should I be archiving current blinkie creators too?

I feel bad just ripping entire collections from active creators to host for download on my site. Feels like theft lmao. So instead, I'll be adding a comments section to the Stash in one of my next site updates. That way, you can let me know if you're an asset creator of any kind and you want your current creations to be archived (hopefully) forever on my site! (with credit, of course!)

you might make a submission form or something; i know a lot of people are intimidated by commenting. also wow 1200 holy shit thats a lot!! good luck

Archive EVERYTHING with credit. People getting in their feelings because someone posted their little gifs on another account (with credit) is so juvenile. 10 or 15 years down the line, they'll cry because they lost all their old blinkies and nobody backed up their sites.

@kascheffer That's an insanely reductive perspective. There's nuance to when taking/crediting is acceptable or not. You can't just go around taking everything without asking first, especially when it comes to active personal websites on a collective site like Neocities.

@melvins-world, See I do agree with this for most art. The thing is, The Stash only hosts forms of art that are typically freeware/linkware (blinkies especially have been wildly distributed without credit for forever). The Stash is kinda unique in that I do extensively credit everything. So it's one of those things where, in most cases, hosting people's stuff wouldn't be against the OG creator's rules. BUT

I do think there's a conceptual difference between re-uploading one or two of somebody's blinkies as part of a personal website, and re-uploading ALL of somebody's blinkies as part of a re-distribution scheme (The Stash). So that's why I'm only going to be hosting things from defunct websites or with permission from active creators. It'll avoid a lot of headaches for me.

I'd disagree that quantity is apart of the nuance in this case; but for defunct websites, I agree; it's mostly fair game at that point. I'm glad you'll seek permission for active sites; having a part of The Stash be a communal effort is well in the spirit of the web revival movement :D!

On a side note, i would like to also let you know that i created my account of Neocities a couple of months ago and your website turned out to be one of my main sources of inspiration to make my own one. So i wanted to thank you for how far Ive come to be with my own website up to now!
